Dr. David McDonald became TK Health’s first Dental Director earlier this month, adding a layer of oversight to the dental care the organization provides.
TK Health is an Oklahoma-based correctional healthcare company that serves jails in 13 states throughout the region. TK Health partners with about 150 jails to provide a variety of contracted healthcare services, including dental care.
In this new position, Dr. McDonald will work under Dr. Jawaun Lewis, Chief Health Officer, and the rest of the medical leadership to ensure a high quality of care from TK Health’s dental team.
Dr. McDonald brings clinical and managerial experience from his nearly 30 years in dentistry into the position. He said the Dental Director position was a natural fit for his dental and management background.
“Owning and operating multiple dental clinics in different states, each clinic being a start from scratch, has allowed me to focus on everything from the initial purchase of equipment, associate dentist acquisition, and clinical care.”
Dr. McDonald earned his doctorate from the University of Washington. He has been recognized nationally by his peers with the American College of Dentists’ Professional Ethics Award and three Meritorious Service Awards from the American Dental Association.
Dr. McDonald was also recognized for his work on the floor of the UN Geneva, for service in more than 20 countries. He continues to serve as a dentist in many areas of the world, including Chad, Cameroon, India, Dubai, Mexico, Tibet, China, Inner Mongolia, Guatemala, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Colombia, and India.
He said his overseas experience also helped prepare him for the new role.
“I’ve dealt with many of the common and not-so-common challenges that come with providing dental care in non-traditional settings.”
Dr. McDonald said he looks forward to helping TK Health dentists succeed and supporting the advancement of patient health.
“It will be great for the clinicians to know that there is a resource available within TK Health to collaborate with should the need arise,” he said.
