Jefferson County Correctional Facility, a TK Health partner, recently earned accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. This accreditation recognizes Jefferson County’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services for the incarcerated population in their care.
To earn NCCHC accreditation, the Jefferson County Correctional Facility underwent a rigorous professional assessment. During the assessment, a team of experienced physicians and correctional health care experts surveyed the facility for compliance with jail-specific standards in areas including patient care and treatment, health promotion, safety and disease prevention, governance and administration, personnel and training, special needs and services, and medical-legal issues.
“We have a constitutional obligation to provide healthcare to those incarcerated in our jail, and we are committed to doing it as well as we possibly can,” Sheriff Zena Stephens said. “I salute the health care staff from TK Health, custody staff, and leadership for their hard work and dedication.”
The mission of the Jefferson County Correctional Facility in Beaumont, Texas, is to provide the safe and secure detention of offenders to protect the staff, inmates, and citizens of Jefferson County.
Jefferson County partnered with TK Health in 2025 to provide healthcare services at the jail, which can house an average of 850 patients per day.
TK Health CEO Flint Junod said earning the accreditation shows the strength of a cooperative partnership. He said:
“This accreditation reflects what’s possible when a county and its healthcare partner are fully aligned around patient care. Our team works side by side with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to build systems that meet and exceed the needs of the population they serve. Earning NCCHC accreditation is a signal that the right processes, people, and standards are in place to deliver care the right way, every day.”
For 45 years, NCCHC’s highly respected standards have provided guidance to help correctional health professionals and administrators improve the health of their incarcerated populations and the communities to which they return, increase efficiency of health services delivery, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and reduce the risk of adverse legal judgments. The consensus-based standards are developed in consultation with national experts in correctional health care, mental health, law, and corrections.
“In achieving NCCHC accreditation, Jefferson County has demonstrated its commitment to quality, standards-based correctional health care,” said Deborah Ross, CCHP, NCCHC chief executive officer. “Accreditation is a voluntary process, and we commend Jefferson County for successfully undertaking this challenge. The health of incarcerated people is a vitally important component of public health.”
Jefferson County is the fifth facility TK Health has assisted in earning accreditation. The other partner sites are:
- David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma
- Pulaski County Regional Detention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas
- Garland County Detention Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas
However, because TK Health operates under NCCHC standards, healthcare at all our partner sites follows the organization’s guidelines.
